Sixth Form 2025

Sixth Form Entry Requirements

We expect all students studying in the Sixth Form to have achieved at least three GCSEs at Grade ⑦ and three at Grade ⑥. We also ask that our prospective Sixth Form students choose a subject combination that is both coherent and realistic in light of their achievements at GCSE, and that they demonstrate a positive attitude to study, the school and all that it has to offer.

External applicants are assessed via a taster day and interview. We hope to see:

  • A strong academic track record, with at least three GCSEs at grade ⑦ and three at grade ⑥;
  • A genuine interest in their proposed A level subjects and a clear rationale for their choices;
  • A track record of engaging positively in activities beyond study. For example: music, drama, sport, Duke of Edinburgh, Scouts, NCS, or part-time work.

For students with GCSE equivalent qualifications and/or GCSE results graded using the former A* – G grade scale the school will consider for admissions purposes:

  • Grades A*, A, and B at par with Grades ⑧, ⑦, and ⑥ respectively

  • Grades attained in GCSE equivalent courses, such as IGCSEs, at par with their GCSE equivalents.

How to Apply

STEP 1 - Complete the application form. Please note you will need:

  • To pay the £90 registration fee
  • To upload copy of the applicant's birth certificate or passport
  • To upload a recent school report and/or evidence of mock GCSE results and/or predicted grades

STEP 2 - The application will then be acknowledged and then the applicant will be invited to attend a Taster Day which will include an interview.

 The applicant will then either:

  • Be offered an unconditional place
  • Be offered a conditional place (only confirmed on receipt of his/her GCSE results in August)
  • Not offered a place

STEP 3 - If the applicant is offered an unconditional or conditional place, he/she will be invited to attend the Sixth Form inductions at the end of June and start of September 2024.

Choosing your A Levels

For most students the demands of university entry are best met by three strong grades at A level. As such, we ask prospective students to select three subjects from among those offered. It is possible to study four subjects, and indeed for Further Mathematicians it is usually considered essential, but this is suitable for only the most academically engaged and industrious students.

It is hard to give general advice about A level choice, but we suggest that you choose subjects:

  • which you are good at;
  • in which you are interested;
  • which make up a meaningful combination in light of your career aspirations.

Every LGS student will receive a one-to-one interview providing the chance to discuss their A level choices, including whether to embark on three or four A levels. For prospective students new to the school, this discussion will form part of the interview.

You will find detailed information about each of the A level courses we offer by following the subject links in the list below or by downloading the Sixth Form 'Aspire' Curriculum Guide PDF at the bottom of this page. You should review this information closely and reflect carefully on it. If you feel excited about the prospect of two years learning in these subjects, you are probably thinking along the right lines.

You should also seek academic advice from your teachers or relevant Head of Department, who will be able to give you personalised guidance. You may also want to check that your chosen subjects are suited to your career aspirations and you should seek guidance from school’s careers adviser if you need it.

We aim to offer every subject listed below. However, where set sizes fall below five students, that subject may be taught with a reduced lesson allocation or may even be unavailable. In addition, the constraints of timetabling, staffing and set-sizes may mean a particularly unusual subject combination is not possible.
