Journeying together
This afternoon, we meet as a community to celebrate our annual Foundation Day and to give thanks for those who had the vision to dream of the remarkable opportunities from which we all benefit today.
Little did that small group of pioneers, reacting to the demise of state grammar schools in Leicester, think that a city school which began falteringly in 1981 with 96 pupils would one day educate 1,500 young people on two beautiful, green sites in Great Glen. We must admire them for their courage and for their passionate belief in a well-rounded, academic education within a Christian ethos.
Compared with most large independent schools, we are very young, and our journey so far has been relatively short, though very exciting! (My last school was founded in 1344 and the King’s School in Canterbury owes its origins to the abbey founded in 597!) Whatever its date of foundation, a school grows and evolves with the people who populate it – the school community – and the values which they both share and embody in their daily lives. In such a way, however short or long our time at LGS, each of us plays a unique part in contributing to the onward journey, hoping that we make our school an even better place, both now and for those who will come after us.
I am very grateful to my colleagues, committed to ‘making a difference’ every day, to our pupils for their positive contribution to our diverse and happy community, and to our parents for believing in LGS and all it stands for.
We have enjoyed a couple of glorious autumn days. I hope you are able to benefit from the wonderful colours and to spend some time with family over the break.
Best wishes,
John Watson
